- Being born in Canada
- Being born outside Canada to a Canadian citizen
- By becoming a Naturalised citizen
- Must have resided in Canada as a PR for 3 years (1,095 days) in the past 5 years before applying.
- A maximum of 1 year (365 days) can be counted if the person was in Canada as a Temporary Resident before obtaining PR.
- Must have filed income taxes for each of the 3 years.
- If between 18-54 years of age, must meet the minimum language requirement (CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking)
- Must pass the citizenship test. (If unsuccessful in first attempt, a second opportunity is given to pass the test)
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must take the Oath of citizenship
**There is a Fast-Track process of obtaining Canadian Citizenship for CAF (Canadian Armed Forces) members**
- Permanent Residency requirements are not met.
- Being subject to a fraud, immigration investigation, inquiry or a removal order.
- Charged with, convicted of, on trial for, or appealing a charge under the Citizenship Act.
- Charged with or convicted of a serious offence inside or outside of Canada
- Charged with, convicted of, on trial for war crimes, crimes against humanity, or an offence under the Citizenship Act in the 4 years before applying.
- Unable to pass the Citizenship test.
- Citizenship was taken away because of fraud in the past 10 years.
- A citizenship application was refused on the grounds of misrepresentation in the past 5 years.
- Right to enter and remain in Canada -: Canadian citizens generally can not be removed or deported from Canada.
- Dual Citizenship -: Canada allows its citizens to hold multiple citizenship.
- Right to vote in provincial or federal elections and to run for a government office like member of parliament.
- Canadian citizens have Visa-free or Visa on arrival access to 188 countries and territories.
Processing time for a straightforward Citizenship application is generally 12 months but it may vary depending on the nature of an application.
Residence Questionnaire (RQ) is sent by IRCC to certain Citizenship applicants and its purpose is to establish that the applicant has honoured the Residency requirements and was physically present in Canada for the prerequisite time to be eligible for grant of Citizenship.
